Who Needs Search Engine Optimization and Why?

If the only way you ever want to get customers or clients is through personal contact and networking, then you probably don’t need a website, much less Search Engine Optimization.

However, even if you do all your contact work by networking with people, a great way to establish yourself as an expert in your field or with your type of product, is to have a website full of content (informational articles and “how-to” articles) that you can send people to, similar to what I am doing with this one.

What’s the big deal about Search Engine Optimization?

Having a website that isn’t search engine optimized is like buying a very expensive billboard, and then putting it on a dead end goat trail in the middle of the Sahara desert. No one will ever see it unless you send them to that exact address.

Why Search Engine Optimize if I’m sending people to my site?

Because not everyone knows you, your service or your product. People rarely search for a specific product name or service company name. They search for window washing in Minneapolis, not Bill’s Window Washing Service. So if your competitor has his site optimized for window washing in Minneapolis and St. Paul and yours is all about Bill’s Window Washing Service, who do you think is going to come up first in the search engines?

Of course, it’s not all about Search Engine Optimization

I have more than a few web designers who send people to my site when they have questions about Writing for the Web or Search Engine Optimization. And what does that accomplish? Many of those people either contact me direct or go back to their web designer and say, I want him to work on my site.

A sales pitch. I have plenty of articles and information about why Search Engine Optimization is important and why Writing for the Web is different than writing for a brochure. And lots of “how-to” help if you want to tackle it yourself.
