Don't Waste Another Dime on an Ineffective Website

Bookmark and Share

Most web designers are either technicians or artists. They can write masterful code or create beautiful websites. But most of them will admit, they don't know how to write web copy or web text. Web writing, like web design, is a unique skill.

  • If an agency were creating a newspaper or magazine ad for you, would you tell them to use your brochure copy?
  • If it was a radio or TV commercial, would you tell them to read your brochure on the air?

Then why would you put your brochure copy on your website?

Your website is a 24/7/365 sales machine. Or it should be.

Years of testing and analysis has been done by Web expert Jakob Nielsen and others on how human beings use the web, how they read web copy and web text, and how they react to online writing versus printed writing.

For instance:

  • Offline, people read; online, people scan.

  • Offline, you have to find the customers: online, they have to find you.

  • Offline, people often don't know they have a problem until you educate them; online, they already know. They're looking for someone who understands and can solve their problem.
  • Offline, people expect to pay for information; online, they expect to get information for free.

A beautiful website that does fancy tricks like Flash intros might make you feel good, but it's my web copy, web text or web writing, that makes people pull out their wallet and buy your product or service.

i'd also like to show you some free website analyses I've done on other websites.

There are so many things you have to consider with web copy, web text or web writing. For instance, do you have:

  • Easily scannable web text?

  • Keywords placed correctly and in the right ratio to get top placement in the Search Engines?

  • Web text that's about your customer or client and their problem? Or do you have "all about you" Syndrome, just talking about your company, your product or your service?

  • "Corpspeak" or "geekspeak" cluttering the text and turning people off? Or do you talk to them "conversationally" to make them comfortable?

  • Hardsell sales pitch before the potential client or customer even knows if you understand their problem? If you walked into a business and they immediately started giving you a sales pitch, what would you do?
